Lithium Ion Batteries - The Right Power For The Job - Lithium Pros
10/6/2016

Lithium Pros

When we took delivery of our new PointClickFish Mobile Command Center (MCC), we realized that power was an issue. The MCC features an elaborate 12V system that was too much for two standard Group 27 standard lead-acid batteries to handle. The way we designed the system, all of our Rigid Industries LED lighting (interior and exterior), Dometic 12v fridge, 2 Dometic 12v awnings, VHF radio, Sound system, and E-Riggers antenna mount were pulling power from our 12v system.

Most of our events take place over multiple days, and the load on the system over that time was too much. So, the search was on. While attending ICAST, our friend Professional Walleye Fisherman and Raymarine Pro Gregg Lamere told us about Lithium Pro’s. After meeting with Kevin at ICAST and learning about the company, product line, and the advantages of lithium ion, it was apparent it would be the answer for our needs.

Here is what we learned about Lithium Ion batteries and Lithium Pro’s .

Lithium Pros is a group of automotive enthusiasts who are focused on bringing the highest performance, ultra lightweight lithium-ion batteries to the racing, EV, marine, fleet, and specialty markets. Their team is made of up SPL, SQ, drifting, drag racing, motorcycle, and off-road competitors as well as some talented engineers, chemists, and machinists. They were established in March 2011, but the management team has been involved with racing for over 20 years.

MORE POWER
Lithium Pros’ batteries use lithium, which is lighter than lead-acid and packs more power. Lithium Pro’s batteries deliver higher power during cranking and hold a higher voltage during discharge than a comparably sized lead acid battery. That means a hotter ignition, faster starts, and more watts for your accessories.

LIGHTER WEIGHT
Because the lithium powering Lithium Pros’ batteries produce more pound-per-pound power than lead-acid, less materials are needed. The result is a lighter battery. In fact, some models are so light they float, making them ideal for racing and marine activities. Weight was an issue for this project, and the fact that these batteries weigh 1/3 the weight of lead acid batteries was a big plus.

FASTER RECHARGING

Lithium Pros’ lithium-ion batteries accept charge current up to 5x faster than lead-acid batteries, and in many cases, Lithium Pros’ batteries recharge in less than an hour. This was BIG for, because with these batteries, our entire system is ready to go and fully charged by the next day.

LONGER BATTERY LIFE
Lithium Pros’ lithium-ion batteries provide over 5x the cycle life at 80% DOD (depth of discharge) compared with standard lead-acid batteries and easily handles 2,000 cycles. Since installing the system (batteries and charger), we have yet to completely drain the system. Before the system was installed, it was not uncommon for the batteries to drain during an event.

MORE EFFICIENT
Lithium Pros’ batteries are 96% efficient at converting input energy into stored energy versus approximately 75% for lead acid.

SAFE & ECO-FRIENDLY
Lithium Pros’ lithium-ion batteries do not contain toxic materials (lead/acid) or emit harmful gases like standard lead-acid batteries. Also, our batteries use Lithium Iron Phosphate which is the safest form of lithium chemistry.

MADE IN THE USA!

HOW LONG WILL THEY LAST?
It depends on your application, but, in general, Lithium Pros batteries operating within their accepted voltage range, at 70% DOD or less, and used at room temperature, will last 10 years.

Which battery did we install?
We installed 2 TM3190 12v/90Ah Lithium Ion Batteries and a 30A/110VAC Lithium Ion Battery Charger.
