Redskins sign 3rd-round draft pick Jordan Reed
ASHBURN The Washington Redskins have signed third-round pick Jordan Reed, putting all of their draft selections under contract for the 2013 season. The Redskins announced the deal today for the tight end from Florida. Reed led the Gators in receiving last year with 45 catches for 559 yards.
Va. Tech board announces prez search committee
BLACKSBURG Virginia Tech's governing board has appointed a search committee to find a replacement for retiring president Charles Steger. Steger announced earlier this month he would retire when his replacement was found. Steger has been president since 2000 and led the school during the 2007 mass shootings in which 32 students and faculty were killed.
Dominion donates $500K to Va. black history museum
RICHMOND Dominion Resources is making the largest ever private-sector donation to the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the $500,000 donation will be announced at a ceremony in Richmond today.
Va. State Police to boost patrols this weekend
RICHMOND Virginia State Police will boost road patrols over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Increased patrols begin today and continue through Monday night. It's part of the annual Operation CARE national traffic-enforcement effort. The additional patrols are aimed at reducing crashes, fatalities and injuries caused by speeding, impaired driving and failure to use seat belts.
Silverstein as good as gold for Cavaliers
DURHAM, N.C. Virginia's hopes to repeat as ACC baseball champion last season all but expired with Scott Silverstein on the mound. This year, Silverstein revived them. The fifth-year senior who twice has undergone Tommy John surgery came within one out of a complete game Thursday in the Cavaliers' 8-2 win over Georgia Tech in pool play.
First two U.Va. games to be televised in late afternoon
Virginia's marquee non-conference football game against Oregon this fall will get a prime TV slot, one of two dozen early-season kickoff times the ACC announced Thursday. The Cavaliers' game against the Ducks on Sept. 7 at Scott Stadium will start at 3:30 p.m. and be broadcast on ABC regionally and ESPN2 outside the region.

SALEM, Va. A Salem volleyball coach accused of using a hidden video camera to record underage players nude and partially undressed now faces 17 additional charges for hiding a camera in a church where players were trying on uniforms.
