Police chief: No charges likely in Va. parade crash
DAMASCUS The driver who plowed into dozens of hikers marching in a Virginia mountain town's parade likely won't face charges, Damascus Police Chief Bill Nunley said Tuesday. Deward Blevins, 87, of Shady Valley, Tenn., had a medical problem that caused him to lose control of his car in the Saturday incident that injured about 50 people, Nunley said.
Anti-uranium forces press Va. candidates for governor
RICHMOND Opponents of uranium mining in Virginia met with Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe on the issue, and they said he's solidly in their corner, while a meeting with Republican nominee Ken Cuccinelli has yet to be arranged.
U.Va. capital campaign exceeds $3 billion goal
CHARLOTTESVILLE After nine years and despite a recession, the University of Virginia has exceeded its $3 billion fundraising goal. President Teresa A. Sullivan announced during graduation exercises Sunday that the university had met the goal, calling it "the most ambitious capital campaign in the history of public higher education."
AMF Bowling proposes merger with Bowlmor
RICHMOND AMF Bowling Worldwide Inc. is proposing a merger with New York-based bowling center operator Bowlmor. Virginia-based AMF filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in November. The company proposed the merger in a new plan to emerge from bankruptcy protection.
U.Va. board elects Goodwin as vice rector
CHARLOTTESVILLE William H. Goodwin Jr. will become vice rector of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors in July. The university says in a news release that board members elected Goodwin on Monday to replace George K. Martin. Martin will become rector when Helen Dragas' term ends on June 30. Goodwin's two-year term as vice rector begins July 1. He will become rector in 2015.
Violent, property crimes down in Virginia
RICHMOND State Police statistics show both violent and property crimes fell about 3 percent in Virginia in 2012 compared to the year before. The report released Monday showed there were 316 murders in the state last year, compared with 305 in 2011.

New vice rector, planning on U.Va. board's agenda
CHARLOTTESVILLE Strategic planning and the selection of a new vice rector are on the agenda for University of Virginia Board of Visitors. The board will meet today and Tuesday in the Rotunda on the university's campus in Charlottesville. Board members will choose a replacement for Vice Rector George K. Martin. Martin will become rector in June when Helen Dragas' two-year term ends.
